Go-ahead for £45m leisure and retail scheme

STOCKPORT Council has secured full planning permission for the new £45m retail and leisure scheme.

Redrock on the former Bridgefield Street car park in the town centre has been designed by BDP, who are also the appointed planning consultant.

GVA and Lunson Mitchenall are advising Stockport Council on lettings and investment.

The scheme is anchored by a new 40,000 sq ft cinema, which has been pre let to The Light Cinemas Ltd.

Discussions are progressing on the letting of the retail and catering units to create the only true restaurant destination in the town centre with a mix of national food and beverage brands.

Redrock will see construction of a new multi storey car park linking to the Debenhams and Merseyway car parks, which together will offer nearly 1200 spaces.

The aims is to make the town centre more integrated as Princes Street and Bridgefield Street are effectively pedestrianised with new pedestrian and cycle friendly surfaces.

The facades of the properties fronting Bridgefield Street will be improved and there will be sitting out areas, not only in the new public square, but also more informally along and within the scheme. Accessibility will be improved in to the town centre with a new, direct access road to and from the A6.

Stockport Council’s executive member for economic development and regeneration Cllr Patrick McAuley said: “Redrock is a vital catalyst for the continued development of Stockport town centre as we work to create a vibrant, sustainable urban destination catering for all. This project is a huge milestone for the town.

“It is one of a number of regeneration projects taking place in Stockport as the Council is committed to investing in the economic growth and regeneration of the borough to bring more jobs and opportunities here.

“Although challenging, we hope to start on site this year with a view to occupation early in 2017.”
