Government urged to splash out on Warrington scheme

COUNCIL bosses in Warrington are vying to get Government confirmation it will provide funding for the latest phase of the ambitious £160m waterfront plan for the town.

Warrington Council lobbied hard to get the Government to commit to the £72.5m funding needed to complete the Waterfront West Link, but is awaiting final confirmation the cash will be released.

The route for the link will provide a connection from the A56 Chester Road to the A57 Sankey Way, including a high level bridge across the Manchester Ship Canal.

Warrington Council says if the funding is confirmed, the Link scheme would be complete by 2021.

Council leader Terry O’Neill, leader, said: “This is another visionary, transformational project for Warrington

“It has the potential to unlock massive economic growth expansion for the town and relieve the gridlock at Bridgefoot roundabout.”

Warrington Council says it will need to undertake a thorough and comprehensive public consultation process with residents and stakeholders regarding the proposed traffic routes.  This will also include achieving planning permission for key pieces of infrastructure through the normal and full democratic process.
