Region set to benefit from 1,000 new BT jobs

UP to 1,000 jobs are to being created at BT in key locations including Manchester and across the North West.

The jobs will be distributed across the UK and the company is unspecific about how many new staff would be recruited in the region.

But Blackburn, Bolton, Lancaster and Warrington were all identified as locations set to benefit.

The new recruits- 700 apprentices and 300 graduates – to BT will work in software development, IT, engineering and digital technology.

BT is also providing up to 1,000 vocational training and work experience placements for out of work youngsters.
 
Prime Minister David Cameron welcomed move saying: “The announcement underlines BT’s commitment to training young people and gives them the security of a monthly pay packet and the chance of a better future.

“Apprenticeships are a fast-track route in to the workplace, and can take you almost anywhere, even offering the chance to gain a degree on the job.

Gavin Patterson, chief executive of BT, said: “The UK’s future as a technology leader hinges on young people getting the skills, support and training they need to create successful careers in science, engineering and IT.

Mike Blackburn, BT’s regional director for the North West, said: “This announcement is great news for our region. It provides new opportunities for our young people, who are essential to the future success and prosperity of the North West.

“These are exciting times. Technology is developing at an astonishingly fast pace and the major, multi million pound investments currently taking place in superfast fibre broadband  and other initiatives are changing for the better the way we live and work.

“Our new recruits will be at the heart of BT’s transformation as we make further advances in high-speed broadband, mobile, sport and digital television. As one of the region’s largest private sector employers and investors, BT is committed to playing a leading role in the future success of the North West.”
