New £7m Preston extra care scheme in for planning

PLANS for a new £7m extra care facility that will boost the provision of housing for older people in Preston are set to be approved by councillors next week.

Specialist housing developer Mulbury Homes is planning to build 70 extra care apartments, aimed at the over 55s, on the site of the disused Manchester Mill in the St Matthews area of the city.

The three-storey development will feature a mix of one and two-bedroom apartments, offering residents the independence of living in their own home, but with the peace of mind and security of having care provision available on site.

The apartments would offer access to a number of communal facilities, including a café, dining room, assisted bathroom and laundry room.

Mulbury Homes is currently in advanced negotiations with a registered housing provider that will own and manage the homes, making them available for affordable rent.

Claire Morris, head of care at Mulbury Homes, said: “This is an exciting scheme that will provide modern, energy-efficient homes in an area where there is high demand for this type of housing. It will also support the wider regeneration of this part of Preston where we are already building new affordable homes.”

Preston-based planning consultancy PWA Planning has advised Mulbury Homes on the planning application, which is recommended for approval at Preston City Council’s planning committee on March 30 2015.

Mulbury Homes is already developing 51 new homes on the adjacent India Mill site where building work has been ongoing since summer 2014. The homes in phase one of the development are due for completion in October 2015 and will be made available for affordable rent and shared ownership by Adactus Housing Association.

Manchester Mill was built in the 1860s as a spinning and weaving mill. It has not been used for many years and has fallen into a state of disrepair.
