490-home plan gets go ahead

A SCHEME for 490 new homes as part of a major mixed use development near Crewe have been given outline planning permission by Cheshire East Council’s planning committee.

The Co-operative Group has been given the provisional green light to proceed with the development on 170 acres of land at Basford East on land between the A500 and Weston Road.

As well as the homes, permission has also been granted for a 21,500sq ft primary school, a pumping station, substation and park.

The plan was approved despite the fact it goes against the Crewe and Nantwich Adopted Local Plan 2011 because the local authority cannot demonstrate a five-year supply of deliverable housing sites.

Co-operative Group’s director of commercial and investment property, Geoff Player, said: : “We have been working closely with Cheshire East Council for a number of years to bring forward the mixed use development of Basford East and so we are delighted that the outline plans for phase one have been approved.

“It will unlock this important strategic development alongside the new Crewe Green Link Road creating a sustainable community including up to 490 residential dwellings, a primary school, landscaping, recreational open space and wildlife areas.

“Of equal importance, Basford East also helps to reduce the pressure to release unplanned and speculative housing sites in less suitable locations within Cheshire East.”
