£9m alternative extra care scheme completed

A £9m extra care scheme in the Lake Distrct has been completed.

The development at Greta Gardens in the heart of Keswick town centre was designed by Lancashire-based Croft Goode Architects.

It is a mixture of 69 apartments across almost two acres and was intended to create a modern alternative for long-term care provision.

The completed scheme allows residents to continue living independently in an area they may well have lived for most of their lives as well as being able to enjoy this independence and actively engage with the local community through a host of on-site amenities and Keswick’s many restaurants and shops just a short walk away.

Eighteen of the self-contained homes are one-bed plus properties fitted with an additional room as a bedroom for residents who require a full-time carer.

An on-site care team will be available 24 hours a day, so if carers are not needed to live in the properties, the extra room can be used as a guest bedroom.

Croft Goode’s Darren Kendrick ran the current care project through the construction phase, providing technical support throughout.

He said: “Greta Gardens compliments its stunning Lake District setting with an intricate, contemporary design.

“The building plan pays respect to the area, utilising locally sourced natural materials such as the Westmorland cropped walling stone and slate roofs to reflect the neighbouring built vernacular.

“After eight years of hard work and effort by all parties involved in the project, it’s great to see the finished result sitting harmoniously within the beautiful surroundings.”
