12-storey office block in Civic Quarter gets green light

PLANS to build a 12-storey office block on the site of Peterloo House in central Manchester have been approved by city planners.

The scheme will involve the demolition of the current seven-storey building on Dickinson Street and George Street, which was built in the late 1960s.

London-based architect Squire & Partners has designed the scheme and Manchester’s The Planning Studio is acting as agent for the applicant, AXA Investment Managers Ltd, which owns the site.

The project for  160,000sq ft over 12 floors of Grade A office space together with parking for 30 cars and 41 bicycles, in addition to public realm works, was approved by officers under Manchester City Council’s delegated powers.

“The Site forms part of a series of major commercial development around St. Peter’s Square and will be part of the major regeneration of the Civic Quarter,” Squire’s design and access statement said.

The accommodation “will surpass current office standards” it added.
The Site was previously a series of warehouses originally developed in the early nineteenth century. 2.2.2 The main entrance of the existing building is on Dickinson Street with a vehicle entrance and external ramp off Back George Street.
