MANCHESTER’S expanded Metrolink tram system, has delivered a surge in revenues and passenger numbers.

The Department for Transport said the 6.6% growth in passenger journeys to 31.2 million in the year to March 31, was the among the biggest annual rise of any system nationwide.

By passenger numbers, Metrolink is the second best used network outside London – the most popular being the Tyne and Wear Metro system which was used by 38.1million people during the year.

Significantly though, despite carrying around seven million fewer passengers, Metrolink generated revenues of £56.8m,  (up 7.8%), while the North East system generated £47.9m.

Metrolink’s growth was driven by the new connections to destinations such as Oldham, Manchester Airport and Chorlton in the period. Work is currently under way on the Second City Crossing, which aims to
will increase the capacity, flexibility and reliability of the network.

There also plans to expand the network further to the Trafford Centre and Port Salford, though funding has yet be agreed for this.

Transport minister Andrew Jones said: “Good local transport makes it easier for people to get to work and see their family and friends. The fact that passenger numbers on tram and light rail are at record levels shows our investment has been worthwhile.

“The improvements we are making to these services are part of our long term economic plan to create a transport system people can rely on, which has the added benefit of creating jobs, growth and opportunity.”
