Morson mourns death of founder

TRIBUTES have been paid to North West businessman Gerry Mason, founder and chairman of Salford-based manpower services company, who has died aged 77.

Mr Mason, who founded the Eccles company 46 years ago, passed away unexpectedly on Friday.

His son Ged, who leads the 800-strong  business, led the tributes to his father, whom he described as “a legend”.

He said: “Morson’s standards today are based on the strong principles and core values he set for us. He ensured that integrity, quality and hard work are woven throughout the company’s fabric.

“His drive and desire for the company to be the best, through hard work and commitment to excellence throughout the business, was matched by his sense of fun and its value in business – and at home.

“My father leaves behind a legacy of a solid, thriving and very successful, industry-leading business. On behalf of all the Mason family I personally thank everyone for their kind wishes and words of support which have been very comforting to our family during this difficult time.”

Mr Mason senior, who set up the business in 1969 after returning to the North West after a spell in Canada, was a father of four and a grandfather to 13. He was an active supporter of a number of local, national and international charities.

Mr Mason retired from his day-to-day role in the business in 1998, but remained an active member of the company’s board until his death.
