Region flies the flag on PM’s Powerhouse mission

MORE than 30 companies,  universities, advisers and business support organisations from across the region are in Singapore as part of a major trade mission led by the Prime Minister and business secretary Sajid Javid.

The focus of the mission is to boost exports to Far East markets and to boost infrastructure investment in northern cities.

Mr Cameron, said: “The government is committed to ensuring the UK’s northern regions play their part in rebalancing our economy.

“With so much untapped potential, I’m delighted to be part of this first Northern Powerhouse trade mission – the first of what I hope will be many.

Business Secretary Sajid Javid added: “Our long-term economic plan seeks to rebalance growth across the regions and nations of the UK, and building a Northern Powerhouse will be a key part of this.

“This mission – the first of its kind – will demonstrate the strength of the northern regions, which are home to some of the most innovative companies and institutions in the world.

Among the businesses on the trip are:   Cheshire-based Cambridge Dream, which runs international leadership and university preparation summer schools at Cambridge University. It has signed a memorandum of understanding with Malaysia-based Brighton Education Group on thr trip.

Also on the trip are: Manchester-based SME FutureEverything which has won a contract with the Singaporean government; private-equity backed manufacturer and exporter ATG Access; Cheshire’s Delamere Dairy;  Bolton-based Vernacare which produces a single-use, bedpan which reduces the risk of infection within the healthcare sector. With the help of UK Trade and Investment the company has recently begun exporting to Singapore, capturing around 24% of their hospital market.
