AO founder Roberts gives away 1 million shares

CHRISTMAS they say, is a time for giving, and John Robers, founder of online white goods retailer AO World has done just that.

The entrepreneur has given away one million shares in total worth more than £1.5m, in the Bolton company to an un-named charity.

A spokesperson for Roberts said: “John regards this as a private matter and will not be revealing further details.”

He retains a 25% shareholding in the business, which he founded after a bet in a pub with friends.

Roberts’ act of generosity will not be the first time that AO’s success will have benefited good causes.

Norman Stoller, one of the original angel investors who backed Roberts when he launched the business, gave away millions of pounds from his windfall when  AO became a public company last year.
