New hospital for city gets go-ahead

NUFFIELD Health’s state-of-the-art hospital and wellbeing centre in Manchester city centre has been given the go-ahead to be built.

Located on a five acre site adjacent to the Manchester Royal Infirmary, the project will see the construction of one of the most modern and technologically advanced tertiary hospitals in the UK.

It will also add to the not-for-profit organisation’s network of 31 other hospitals across the country.

After Manchester City Council Committee’s decision, Barbara Baker, Nuffield Health’s Manchester market director, said: “This is an exciting milestone in our long-term vision to help transform the health prospects of the people of Manchester.

“The planning application received wholesale support from our many partners and neighbours and we are delighted that the Committee has granted its approval.

“We consulted widely in developing the plans for the hospital to ensure that the facility we build will deliver significant health benefits to the people of Manchester and support existing healthcare providers, whilst also undertaking a sensitive regeneration of this neglected piece of land.”

Further site remediation and demolition of some buildings on site will commence in early spring.

News of the successful planning application follows last month’s launch of Nuffield Health’s five-star, Diagnostic Suite at Citylabs which will deliver world class MR, X-ray, mammography, CT, cardiac and ultrasound services.

Health assessments, physiotherapy services and private GP appointments will also be offered as part of a complete approach to health and wellbeing.
