Shipyard gets £201m submarine boost

UP to £201m is to be spent on the design of the Royal Navy’s next generation of nuclear submarines in a significant boost to the Cumbrian town of Barrow were 6,500 people work.

The cash will fund equipment and systems layout design and prototype production.

Ageing Vanguard class submarines are to be replaced by Successor vessels, designed by at the BAE Systems shipyard from the early 2030s.

The funding is part of £3.3bn being spent on assessment for the programme.

Chief of Meteriel (Fleet) Vice Admiral Simon Lister hailed the Successor as “the most technologically advanced submarine in the Royal Navy’s history.

The £201m will finance innovation, design and engineering work carried out by BAE Systems, Babcock International, Rolls-Royce and other suppliers.

Meanwhile, BAE is also building seven Astute class nuclear-powered attack submarines for the Royal Navy.
