Law firm targets £10m

LAW firm Slater Heelis is targeting a £10m fee income after making four acquisitions in three years across the Manchester legal market.

The firm, which has four offices and employs more than 130 staff, says it’s now on target for a £10m turnover before the end of 2018.

Since 2013, the firm has acquired four Manchester-based firms (Tarran & Co, Nichols Locke, Cottrills and Mohindra Maini) resulting in a £7.5m fee income practice by the end of this financial year.

According to the firm it has increased turnover by 26% in the last year, increased its profit per equity partner and boosted headcount from 68 to 137 people.
The firm has boosted its corporate team with the arrival of corporate lawyers including Katharine Mellor, Simon Wallwork and Sunil Mohindra.

Chris Bishop, managing partner of Slater Heelis, said: “Organic growth whilst maintaining the firm’s culture is our focus for the next three years. It’s been a dynamic couple of years for the firm and we feel we’re now in the place we set out to be in 2013 when we began talking to other complementary law firms.

“The fact we acquired four firms in such a short space of time meant we had to really focus on our culture and make sure we communicated this effectively internally and externally. It’s tough, exciting and challenging all at the same time.”

He added that the firm is in good shape financially, with low debt and that it is well balanced to ensure it is not overly reliant on one field of the law.

“We have a full spread of legal services for businesses and individuals and believe this is the key to sustainable growth,” he said.

Slater Heelis was established 1773 and is one of Manchester’s longest standing law firms.
