Tobacco giant reads smoke signals with acquisition

CHESHIRE-based British American Tobacco has acquired Ten Motives, the UK e-cigarettes business with a strong pedigree in traditional grocery and convenience channels.

The deal comes after reports from the Royal College of Physicians last week that electronic cigarettes could save millions of lives, scotching fears they may tempt non-smokers and children.

BAT managing direct of next generation products Kingsley Wheaton said: “This is an exciting acquisition for British American Tobacco which further strengthens our UK Next Generation Products (NGP) business and complements our existing product portfolio.

“We are seriously committed to the NGP category, and this acquisition is another big step on our journey.”

Ten Motives, headquartered in Sandbach, Cheshire, was represented by Convex Capital. Ten Motives supplies e-cigarettes to Tesco, Sainsbury’s, WHSmith, The Co-op and directly to consumers through its two websites and six retail outlets.
