Top Salford scheme to tackle skills and unemployment

A 12-week traineeship programme with construction specialist, Keepmoat and Together Housing has been reinstated for a second year, in an effort to combat the rising skills shortage while supporting the region’s unemployed.

After the introduction of a construction traineeship programme last year, Keepmoat and Together Housing have teamed up with Salford City College once again to offer 16-24 year olds in the region with the opportunity of gaining qualifications, on-site training and support to find work upon completion of the scheme.

The traineeship is for candidates who fall under the NEET category (Not in Education, Employment or Training).

It consists of two weeks in college studying for the leading skills certification scheme within the UK construction industry (CSCS), eight weeks on-site and two weeks searching for a job; where employability skills, interview exercises and CV writing skills are taught.

All students on last year’s programme effectively secured work by the end of the 12 weeks through Keepmoat’s supply chain, and the firm is confident that this year’s candidates will follow suit.

Julie Ferns, community engagement coordinator at Keepmoat in the North West, said: “When we approached Salford City College last year, we were impressed with their commitment to supporting the wider community and not just existing students.

“This was the first ever construction based programme that the college has written and that joint vision not only works to propel careers but also support in our efforts to tackle the skills crisis our industry is facing.

“Together Housing is kindly taking on six trainees at the Pendleton regeneration scheme, which will be a remarkable project for the candidates to work on; and our client Great Places Housing has also come on board to support the scheme.”
