Crane hire firm widens portfolio with acquisition

MANCHESTER-based crane hire firm Hewden has purchased the rental arm of Firefly – a cleantech company which designs and manufactures hybrid generators.

The  acquisition, for an undisclosed amount,  means a range of equipment will be added to Hewden’s product portfolio, including generators, hybrid units, solar panels, distribution units, cables and lighting.

Hewden said the additions would particularly help the firm’s move into the events sector, where it has experienced significant growth.

Adrian Murphy , Hewden chief executive, said: “This investment allows us to expand our portfolio of sustainable power products and ensure we deliver on our promise to be the leading on-site solutions provider in the UK.

“We’re going into new areas such as events, as well as specialist parts of the industrial sector.”

The acquisition of Firefly’s rental business follows more than £25m worth of investment this year on products such as generators, skid steer and tracked loaders, telehandlers, non-mechanical plant and cranes. It also follows Hewden’s acquisition of lifting and materials handling firm, Interlift at the start of the year.

“Over the past 12 months we’ve restructured the business to take a more sector based approach. We’ve brought in the best people in the industry and given them the products and services our customers are asking for.  Nobody else in the market can quite do what we do, so we’re in a very good position right now,” added Murphy.
