Morrisons strikes key deal with Timpson

SUPERMARKET group Morrisons has signed a nationwide deal with cobbler and key-cutting chain Timpson as part of its store revamp scheme.

Under the agreement, Manchester-based Timpson will take over the running of Morrisons’ dry cleaning operations at 116 stores and will expand the offer to include key cutting, shoe and watch repairs as well the fast growing areas of phone and tablet repair.

The outlets will be branded ‘Timpson at Morrisons’ and further units will roll out in Morrisons stores as they undergo refit under its Fresh Look programme.

Roger Fogg, director of popular and useful services at Morrisons, said: “This partnership will mean that customers will find more popular and useful services at Morrisons stores.

“This is a way of growing our offer that is both capital-light and simpler for our colleagues.”

James Timpson, Timpson chief executive, said: “Through Timpson at Morrisons we will give shoppers our full service offer, from key cutting to mobile phone repairs, while they shop. We’re also looking forward to making our great value dry cleaning service available to new customers in even more Morrisons stores.”

Timpson has more than 1,400 outlets across the UK and was launched by current chairman John Timpson’s great-grandfather in 1865.

Earlier this month, Morrisons announced an increase in like-for-like sales in the 13 weeks to 1 May, up 0.7% excluding fuel (up 1.2% including fuel) which continues an upward trend for the grocer.

This improvement, along with the Amazon tie-up announced earlier this year, led retail analysts to declare: “Hats off to David Potts, he appears to have stopped the rot.”
