Omega South gets big thumbs up

Omega South

A MAJOR outline planning application, submitted by Omega Warrington Ltd, for the next stage of development on Omega South has been approved by Warrington Borough Council’s planning committee.

The plans include 1,100 new homes, including 20% starter homes, along with local shops, restaurants and cafes, public house/ bar, a care home, and a hotel, supported by extensive landscaping and wildlife habitat preservation.

Transport studies were undertaken to inform local road and junction improvements and work is already underway on part of Omega South for the construction of a new primary school, Barrow Hall. The school is due to open in September 2016 and will serve existing local residents and the new community at Omega.

The plans will now be referred to the Department for Communities and Local Government before a final planning permission can be issued.

Omega Warrington is a joint venture between Miller Developments and KUC Properties, in partnership with landowner the Homes and Communities Agency and supported by Warrington Borough Council and the Cheshire and Warrington LEP.

Andrew Sutherland, joint managing director of Miller Developments, partner in OWL said: “This is a major milestone for Omega and Warrington. We hope that this will soon mean that we are able to bring forward a whole range of much needed, quality new housing, including affordable starter homes, for the area.

“Very importantly, this new development will also be supported by significant local transport infrastructure improvements and the new community will link into a 35 acres ‘Green Heart’ and a huge network of green spaces and cycle ways.

“Both new and existing residents will also benefit from new shops, leisure opportunities and community facilities which, we’ve heard from local residents, the area really needs.

“All of these different uses will complement the job opportunities within the growing business community already thriving on Omega; it will create the truly mixed community which OWL and its partners have been working hard to bring forward as part of a successful masterplan for Omega.”

Deborah McLaughlin, executive director, North West at the Homes and Communities Agency said “The government has ambitious plans to increase housing supply and home ownership.

So it’s great news that this application on HCA land for over 1000 new homes at Omega has been given the green light by Warrington. It is also significant because 20% of those homes will be starter homes for young people trying to get on the housing ladder, and will be sold with a discount of up to 20%.”

The committee’s decision follows extensive public consultation on the plans in May and June 2015, which included a month-long online consultation and public events engaging local residents, businesses, community groups, parish councils and ward councillors.

Warrington Borough Council leader Cllr Terry O’Neill said: “It’s easy to forget that only three years ago Omega was just an empty site. It is now home to 5,000 jobs and a flagship for enterprise in Warrington and the North West.

“This support for homes, shops, restaurants and hotel will further add to the offer and attractiveness of the site and so enhance even further Warrington’s potential.”
