Blue print for gig and restaurant in former auction house

PLANS for a restaurant and music venue with a rooftop bar in Manchester city centre have been submitted.

Owners of The Lock Tavern in London’s fashionable Camden district want to create the new gig and eatery in the former Capes Dunn art auction house on Charles Street.

The three-storey building dates back to 1912 and was ounce home to a printing press but it has been empty for nearly 12 months.

Plans include opening part of the roof and an outdoor terrace with views towards the Palace Hotel.

Live performances will take place in a multi-purpose room on the first floor and the top floor will feature a private party zone.

Plans lodged with Manchester City Council’s planners say: “The new owners are passionate about the building and passionate about the proposed use.

“They are keen to research the history, find out stories, explore the quirks and keep as many of the original features as possible.

“Contextually the scheme fits well with the surrounding uses and is sensitive to the industrial character of the existing building and wider area,” the plans say.

“The use will be primarily aimed at the younger generation, but will cater for local business people and residents, as well as passers-by and visitors, by offering various food options and a relaxed and pleasant atmosphere to meet, catch up on work while out of the office, and enjoy throughout the day.”
