How to be the early bird tomorrow

Do any of us actually like getting out of bed in the morning? We clearly don’t if we all value a lie-in on the weekend. But there are a range of things we can do to make getting up first thing in the morning much easier and have the time to be prepared for the day ahead. Try out these seven things tomorrow morning and see if they work for you.

Slow down on the coffee
Research from the Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine found that those who are still consuming caffeine up to six hours before they hit the hay will have disrupted sleep. If you stop drinking caffeine around late afternoon, you will get a better night’s sleep and will wake up feeling more refreshed.

Turn everything off
You’re up in a few hours, so why are you waiting for something exciting to happen on Facebook?! Staring at blue and white light from screens actually prevents your brain from releasing melatonin, a hormone that lets your body know when it’s time for bed. By staying away from artificial lights like computer and tablet screens for at least three hours before you head to bed will mean you can have a much better night’s sleep.

Have a night time routine
Routines at night don’t just work for kids, they can do the world of good for you too. If you’re up to something different each night, firstly, well done for having a social life but secondly, this means that you have no routine to your evening and probably never get much sleep, making it difficult to get up the next morning. Have set times for socialising, eating and having some me time. It is worth setting a bedtime alarm so you know what time you need to start your bed routine and have enough sleep.

Wake someone else up
If you take on the responsibility of waking someone else up as it will give you more of a reason to get out of bed and get moving. If you laze around for a while that is your own choice, but if you risk someone else’s success you’ll feel awful all day for not getting up in time.

Put your alarm somewhere else
If you sleep with your alarm next to you, it’s easy to hit the snooze button several times. So put your phone or alarm clock the other side of the room, so you actually have to get out of bed to turn it up. Hopefully, you won’t throw yourself back into bed and you will be up and moving for the day!

Don’t oversleep
You may think that having 10 hours’ sleep is really good for you, but it’s actually not. Experts say that sleeping too much is bad for you as the longer you sleep, the more difficult it is to get out of bed. On the other hand, you need a good amount of sleep to be productive, so make sure you’re getting at least eight hours a night.

Treat yourself
If you have a good reason to get out of bed, chances are it will be much easier to drag yourself out of your bedroom. Stock up on your favourite breakfast ingredients or sign up to an early morning fitness class, not only will they get you pumped for the day, they give you a reason other than work to get up and be productive.
