Sainsbury’s to launch local store in town

SAINSBURY’S is to open a new store at Stockport Exchange, following a deal to lease the first commercial unit at the scheme to the retail giant.

The new 4,000sq ft Sainsbury’s Local store will be located opposite Stockport train station in the ground floor of a 50,000sq ft, Grade A office building, which is currently under construction.

The new five-storey office is part of the second phase at the town’s gateway development.

National developer and urban regeneration specialist, Muse Developments, is delivering the wider Stockport Exchange regeneration scheme in partnership with Stockport Council.

As well as the office, this phase of development will deliver a new 115-bed Holiday Inn Express and public space outside the station, creating an attractive and thriving gateway to the town centre.

The road layout is also being reconfigured to improve access to the station and provide a dedicated drop-off facility.

Wes Erlam, Development Director at Muse, said: “It’s excellent news that Sainsbury’s has chosen Stockport Exchange for a new convenience store. This is a testament to the development’s ideal location next to a busy transport hub, right in the heart of the town’s commercial quarter.

“The new store will add to the amenities available for office workers, hotel guests and commuters and is a key milestone in establishing the scheme as a new place to work and visit, and as a gateway to Stockport town centre and the wider region.”

Cllr Kate Butler, executive member for Economy and Regeneration at Stockport Council, said “I’m delighted to welcome Sainsbury’s to Stockport Exchange. Having them opening as part of the development is great news, and the store will be a fantastic addition to the scheme as well as our town centre.

“It is amazing to see how work at Stockport Exchange is pressing ahead and how this area of our town centre is being transformed.”

The new Sainsbury’s Local will open in November 2016, and will create at least 20 jobs for local people.

A Sainsbury’s spokesperson, said: “We are extremely pleased to be opening a new store at Stockport Exchange, and look forward to welcoming our first customers later this year.”

Completion of the office is expected in October and the hotel in December 2016.

Stockport Exchange is part of the Council’s £1bn Investing in Growth work that is building on the town’s great strengths to make it an even better place to live, work and visit. It will ultimately deliver up to 375,000sq ft of office space and 28,000sq ft of commercial floor space.

The first phase of the scheme – a 1,000 space multi-storey car park operated by NCP – was completed in 2014 and is open to the public.

Cushman & Wakefield and CBRE are appointed as joint agents for the scheme.
