Green light for tallest building outside London

Owen Street

PLANNING permission has been granted for what will be the tallest building in the UK outside London – in Manchester.

The new 66-storey residential tower at Owen Street will stand 200 metres high, with only the Shard in in the capital having more floors.

The landmark development will provide 1,508 apartments and penthouses together with amenities including lounges, roof garden, swimming pool, indoor tennis court, fully equipped gymnasium, treatment rooms, business facilities, 24/7 concierge and extensive basement parking.

The development will also feature a variety of food and beverage offerings spilling out onto an extensive new public square fronting the River Medlock.

The scheme has been designed by SimpsonHaugh & Partners and comprises four towers rising to 39, 46, 52 and 66 storeys. Construction is due to start this summer 2016 and will continue for around 54 months.

It will be the latest venture by Renaker Build, which is currently constructing around 1,600 high quality apartments with residents’ amenities across four sites at Greengate, Cambridge Street, Regent Road and Wilburn Basin.

In addition, the firm also recently secured planning consent for a 44-storey, 349 apartment scheme at Exchange Court, Greengate.

Andy Finch, Head of Sales at Renaker Build, said: “We are thrilled to have received permission for our latest development which will be the first within the Great Jackson Street framework, creating a new community at the southern gateway to the core of Manchester city centre.

“We are fully committed to the redevelopment of the wider Great Jackson Street area and further regeneration and development will follow alongside our Owen Street scheme. This development has been designed with a wide range of apartment types, the vast majority of which are significantly more generous than purchasers will find elsewhere in the city.

“With the larger unit sizes, a high-end specification and residents’ amenities that are genuinely unmatched anywhere else in Manchester, this will undoubtedly become the new destination of choice for city centre residents”.

Renaker also has a strong pipeline of proposed city centre developments including further residential-led schemes adjacent to Owen Street and in the Greengate area, delivering much needed regeneration and effectively creating two new neighbourhoods at either end of Deansgate to the North and South sides of the city centre.
