Update: M53 reopens after police incident

THE M53 in Merseyside is closed northbound – from Junction 1 to the A59 – following an ongoing police indicent.

Officers were called to the tunnel at around 1.50pm because of concerns for the safety of a man on the bridge.

Police, Merseyside Fire and Rescue and the Highways Agency are at the scene near the Wallasey tunnel.

Poulton Road and Mill Lane are closed, affecting traffic in both directions.

Traffic is being diverted locally, from Junction 1.
