Blueprint for £50m apartments scheme in city submitted

PLANS to transform a Grade II-listed mill complex near Manchester’s Piccadilly station into a £50m residential scheme have been submitted.

Capital&Centric has tabled the proposal which will result in 201 one, two and three-bed apartments.

The cluster of buildings are situated on Fair Street, Chapeltown Street, Congou Street and Baird Street around a central courtyard area.

The proposed scheme – known as Crusader Works – was designed by Shedkm and will provide 126 apartments in the existing mill and a further 75 apartments in an adjacent 10 storey building.

Adam Higgins of Capital&Centric said: “Crusader Works is one of Manchester’s forgotten treasures and has been neglected for too long.

“Our unique design led scheme will see the sensitive restoration of the mill using creative conservation designs to provide efficient and attractive living spaces and ensure the long term sustainability of the listed buildings.

“The apartments in the mill will allow its residents to experience many of the mill’s original features including the timber soffits and original brickwork and ironwork. The neighbouring new building is simple in its design so as not to detract from the impressive character of the mill.”

He added: “Together with Kampus – our £200m scheme on Aytoun Street with our joint venture partner, Henry Boot – Crusader Works forms an important part of a jigsaw in the regeneration of this area of Manchester and reinforces our firm commitment to creating a vibrant new destination for the city.”

Work is due to start on site next May with the first phase of the apartments to be ready for occupation towards the end of 2018.
