Woodroffe to bring YO! Homes to Manchester

THE first development of 24 modular YO! Home apartments in New Islington, Manchester has been cleared by planners.

Conceived and developed by Simon Woodroffe – the man behind YO! Sushi and YOTEL – YO! Home is marketing the development as “a new type of intuitive living space set to revolutionise the contemporary home”, introducing a new concept for low-cost compact living.

The micro home plans, which include pop-up furniture to make the most of the space, were origianlly rejected by council planners last month because of concerns over their small size – they are around 41 sq m, the size of a studio apartment.

A unique aspect to the project, designed by Glenn Howells Architects, is its modular construction, which will be built offsite by SIG.

This reduces on-site costs, and eliminates factors such as weather affecting build times, and therefore cost, allowing us to bring luxury living to everyone, at affordable prices.

Simon Woodroffe said: “Homes help shape our lives. They are our refuge, and our rock. Since the invention of the city centre apartment, we’ve never really re-invented it. YO! Home is that new invention. Moving parts draw on the wealth of engineering technology taken from fields as diverse as yacht and automotive design, and the mechanics of stage production, allowing the transformation of a 40 sq m space (the size of a one bedroom apartment) into what feels like a much bigger home.”

Jack Spurrier, managing director YO! Home said: “The long-term vision is to build blocks of single space YO! Homes in city centres around the world, from Manhattan and Buenos Aires, to Tokyo and Shanghai, changing the way people live in small spaces whilst addressing the growing population issues.”
