Olympic and Paralympic parade time announced

THE precise time has been released for the long-awaited return of Olympic and Paralympic champions in Manchester on October 17.

The national parade will set off from the Museum of Science and Industry on Liverpool Road at 4.30pm and follow a route to Albert Square where the athletes will return for a special event approximately an hour later.

The event has been timed to allow as many people as possible to attend, starting after schools have finished and ending just in time for the end of the working day.

Deputy leader of Manchester City Council Cllr Sue Murphy said: “First and foremost this will be a family-friendly event and we want to make sure as many people as possible can get into the city centre, be part of the celebration and help cheer on our Olympic and Paralympic heroes.

“Manchester is home to some of the biggest names of the Games and it is an honour to host the national parade for Team GB and Paralympic GB.

“Make a note in your diary- we want to line the streets and fill Albert Square to give our athletes the celebration they deserve.”

Stockport-born athletes Kate Richardson-Walsh and Sarah Storey, along with Oldham’s Nicola White are expected to attend the event.

Team GB won 67 medals in the Rio Olympic 2016, with 23 of those coming from Manchester-based athletes.
