£50m Crusader Mill scheme gets the go-ahead

PLANS for a £50m scheme to restore the Grade II-listed Crusader Mills in Manchester’s Piccadilly into 201 loft apartments and build 75 new flats have been approved.

Regeneration specialist Capital & Centric has been given the go ahead to carry out the scheme which will include a “tranquil residents courtyard”.

A unique layout will use an internal access cloister to give 360 degree views of the garden, where people will be able to meet and socialise.

The new-build element has been designed by architects ShedKM.

Earlier this week, Capital & Centric announced that it had boosted its growing portfolio of residential developments following the acquisition of Talbot Mill – an 80,000 q ft mill in Castlefield, which was acquired in an off market deal and brings its emerging pipeline of city centre homes to 1,100.

Just last month the developer secured planning consent for the £200m Kampus project, its joint venture with Henry Boot Developments.

Tim Heatley of Capital & Centric said: “Crusader is the epitome of what we love to do, restoring an overlooked building in a location that needs repositioning and creating something special that acts as a catalyst for the regeneration of the surrounding area.

“Our layouts will divide opinion, the sizes of some of our apartments will be too big for many investor’s liking but that’s intentional, we’ve designed them for residents of Manchester – not the spreadsheets.

“We’re not developing ‘luxury’ apartments, we’re creating quirky Mancunican loft spaces with raw character and personality. You’ll love it or hate it but that’s the point, we’re providing choice and an alternative to the norm. It’s what we’ve been doing since we started seven years ago.”
