Your top 10: Two big acquisitions and a docklands blaze

IT’S money that makes the world go round, so they say.

This is illustrated no better than the fact that stories relating the two multi-million pound deals were top two best read on TheBusinessDesk website this week.

Top of the pops was the swoop by US-owned multi-national Flagship Food Group for Carlisle-based chilled food specialist Calder Foods, which has a turnover of £22m.

Founders Nigel Harrison and Paul Baker, who remain in the business as joint managing directors described the sale as “one of the toughest business and personal decisions we have ever had to make”.

That deal paled into insignificance, however, compared to the one which saw Pinewood Studios sold to a private equity fund for £323m – number two in the charts.

Its completion saw sees major shareholders Peel and Stockport-based jewellery company Warren James take home £126m and £84m respectively.

In at number three was an old fashioned industrial blaze on Merseyside. The fire at a recycling plant in Searforth docks caused havoc in the area with firefighters detained at the site for several days making sure the area was safe.
