Salford Quays collaborates with Northern cities for Lightwaves 2016

LIGHTWAVES 2016 will cast a glow on Salford Quays this weekend as 9 artworks go on show for two weeks only.

The large-scale commission is a co-collaboration with Blackpool Illuminations, which will provide some of its most popular light features to wow visitors.

The free event will encompass all the best work from emerging talents across the North-West, including SHINE, in partnership with Leeds Light Night and HeartBeat, a project in partnership with Blackpool Illuminations.

Organisers of the Illuminations will also provide some of their best light features, from TV villains the Dr Who Daleks, to childhood favourites Postman Pat and Noddy.

Showcasing in its hometown, Northern Art Film Competition winner One Square Mile, commissioned with the University of Salford, will examine nature, architecture and communities within a square mile of Salford Quays and MediaCityUK.

The film-makers Chris Paul Daniels and Sam Meech will be accompanied by films from Cecilia Stenborn, Antony Barkworth-Knight and Declan Colquitt, all of whom were recognised in an open call part of the competition.

Sam Meech said: “The film has been a long process in the making.

“It’s a very short film but it’s trying to show what is a diverse area in and around Salford and MediaCity.

“I’m very interested in seeing what people make of it and seeing what areas they recognise and what places might surprise them.

“There are lot of things right next door to each other [in Salford] and it’s a place in the flux.

“I’m delighted to be showing the film in the space and that environment.”

Also in the line-up are: Voyage by Aether and Hemera, Footsteps by Sam Sebbage, Laiki#5 by Edyta Masior and Fire Flies from the Fixed Grinn Collective.

On the MediaCityUK piazza will be a statement piece entitled Today I Love You which will mark the beginning of a partnership between Quays Culture and Amsterdam Light Festival.

For families, from December 9 to 11, visitors can create their own light graffiti using time-lapse cameras and LED technology.

This event is free to attend and the Lightwaves festival will run from Friday December 9 to Sunday December 18.
