80 new homes get green light

A plan for 80 new homes on the outskirts of Wigan have been approved.

Planning specialist Barton Willmore, on behalf of Wainhomes, has been given the green light for the development at Standish – including 25% affordable housing and 40% two and three-bedroom properties.

Barton Willmore says new and improved open spaces will  provide residents with public footpaths and cycle ways (known as ‘The Line’).

The retention and enhancement of the ‘ecology buffer’ will contribute to these spaces it will also provide a new pond for the enrichment of newt habitat and provide an enhancement to the Site of Local Biologicial Interest to the north of the site.

Wigan Council planning committee unanimously resolved to approve the scheme at Langham Road, despite an earlier scheme being held back by the council on fears that it breached the Standish cap on the number of new homes in the area.

Representatives of local community group Standish Voice, argued that the Core Strategy placed a cap of 1,000 homes in Standish and that this scheme would breach that, with 1,404 homes already consented.

However, Dan Mitchell, planning partner at Barton Willmore highlighted that the council continued to experience land supply challenges.

He said: “This site is the last piece of the jigsaw in what is an area identified by the Council for residential growth. The scheme provides net ecological benefits, a better mix of homes and improvements to ‘The Line’ – an important local recreation route.”

The site will provide the final phase of Wainhomes Cat i’ th’ Window development which is now well underway.
