Poignant images from Japanese children of Second World War

An exhibition of picture diaries made by Japanese primary school children towards the end of the Second World War during 1944 and 1945 is taking place at Manchester Central Library on Wednesday (February 8).

The exhibition is being run by The University of Manchester’s School of Arts, Languages and Culture and runs until March 30.

It will display 50 entries of the picture diaries by both children from rural areas and evacuees from Tokyo.

They give a vivid insight into the school lives of the children near the end of the war. English translations and explanations are provided.
The exhibition is subsidised by the Japanese Foundation.

At the launch, Dr Peter Cave and Dr Aaron Moore will introduce the exhibition, before showing a short film about the lives of evacuated Japanese children during the war.
