Nycomm says ‘Roger that’ to two-way radio firm acquisition

Manchester-based communications supply specialist The Nycomm Group has announced a major new expansion by creating a specialist two-way radio hub following the acquisition of Bristol-based Co-Channel Electronics as it gears up to hit the £150m turnover mark.

Founded in 1978 Co-Channel specialises in two-way radio and wireless communications and serves a broad range of clients across the West Country.

It’s the latest name to join the current £100m turnover Nycomm ‘family’ of businesses following the purchase of Bury-based communications and data specialist Pennine in December last year.

This latest deal expands Nycomm’s nationwide geographical reach and provides Pennine with a new platform to move further forward, the company said.

Co-Channel’s staff and operations will be integrated within Pennine’s national PennineRadio division and its Bristol premises will be retained as a regional technical and sales support hub.

All Co-Channel staff are being retained by Pennine, with the exception of former joint owner Teresa Griffiths who is retiring. Founder and managing director John Crawford is being retained on a consultancy basis.

Nycomm Group chairman Julian Niman said: “Co-Channel is an excellent fit for our business. That’s due both to the respect the business and its staff command for technical excellence and the growth which PennineRadio is already enjoying in the South West.

“This acquisition will facilitate further growth and provide us with additional resource as part of an expanded geographical presence in both the South West as well as northern England and London.”

Pennine already provides two-way radio installation, supply and maintained contract services to an array of private and public sector organisations across the country including the Hinkley Point C construction site in Somerset.

The company was itself founded as a two-way radio servicing specialist in 1976. It has since extended its expertise to embrace unified communications, mobile telephony, wired and wireless networking, cloud and IT services.

The acquisition – for an undisclosed sum – is the latest to be completed by The Nycomm Group of companies since it snapped-up Pennine late last year. ycomm comprises four main brands of Nimans (comms distribution), Rocom (specific corporate end user sales), Videonations (audio visual and video conferencing specialist) as well as Pennine.

Nycomm was advised by Sharon Harrison and Richard Robinson from solicitors Napthens, complemented by tax advisors Tom Minnikin from Forbes Dawson and Paul Billingham and Tom Jones from Knight Corporate Finance.
