Engineering giant Amec Foster Wheeler has has secured a £125m contract to provide long-term support to EDF’s UK nuclear reactors.

The five-year deal, which has an option to be extended for a further five years,  is expected to be worth between £25m and £30 a year.

It will see Amec, which has also announced it is to be acquired by Wood Group in a £2.2bn deal, continue its operational support for the UK reactor fleet, which began more than 50 years ago.

Called Technical Support Alliance 3 (TSA3), the contract will see Amec involved in major station upgrades, compliance-related activities, and fleet-critical projects. It follows Amec Foster Wheeler’s partnership with EDF Energy under two similar frameworks – TSA1 and TSA2.

Stuart Crooks, EDF Energy’s managing director for generation, said: “Amec Foster Wheeler has worked in partnership with EDF Energy for a number of years and shares our vision for zero harm, exceptional nuclear safety performance, and world record-breaking results.

“The support of all our strategic partners is an important factor as we continue to operate our nuclear stations to the highest standards, providing secure, low-carbon, affordable power for the UK.”

Clive White, president of Amec Foster Wheeler’s Clean Energy business, said: “Amec Foster Wheeler’s deep technical knowledge and strong track record in project delivery are crucial to our continued support for EDF Energy’s UK stations, which are producing more electricity than at any time since 2003.”

The sale of the company’s £274m turnover nuclear businesses, including Clean Energy which employs more than 1,200 people in the North West, is going ahead separately to the £2.2bn Wood Group deal announced today and is expected to complete in the third quarter of 2017.
