The Office fans set to put their knowledge to the test

It may be almost 15 years since mockumentary sitcom The Office was on our screens, but the programme hasn’t become any less popular in that time.

Not only do we continue to quote the show in our own offices, the series helped to launch the careers of some of Britain’s best actors, including Ricky Gervais, Stephen Merchant and Martin Freeman.

Now, fans of the show are being invited to put their knowledge to the test at a venue in Liverpool.

The UK Office Quiz Night is taking place at The Merchant in Liverpool city centre on both Tuesday March 21 and Wednesday March 22 and will be hosted by fan favourite Ewan Macintosh, who played the hilarious role of Keith in the show.

Independent LiverpoolThe event has been set up by Independent Liverpool, whose aim it is to showcase independent businesses in the city through a membership card and hosting a range of events, from film to food and drink. The company are now hosting themed quiz nights and they have already hosted ones based on The Simpsons and Game of Thrones. The Office event is set to be the most popular yet. David, co-founder at Independent Liverpool, said: “The UK Office is personally our favourite sitcom of all time so was only a matter of time.

“It was random how we stumbled upon Keith and we had to have a good lie down once he agreed to host it. We only like to do events that we ourselves get excited about. The feedback has been great and we constantly want to try push the boundaries of events in Liverpool and this could be the start of something special.”

There will be around 30 teams of four to six people at the event, with the top five teams coming away with prizes, from a stapler trapped in jelly to free meals at independent venues across the city.

Independent LiverpoolBut what makes The Office so timeless and still so popular? David thinks it is how relatable the series is. He said: “The UK Office graced our screens where the mockumentary-style comedy set at a nondescript paper company followed the trials and tribulations of insufferable middle-management type David Brent, the man that meant well yet managed to offend everyone.

“From secret feelings to pranks, The Office captured the heart of the everyday in cringeworthy covered gold and that’s what makes it so good. People love relating to things and The Office took the everyday and mundane and made it special. The humour is timeless and it was one of the very first sitcoms filmed in that time where satire and sarcasm took centre stage.”

Independent Liverpool are also planning on setting up many more fun events in the city, including a “How Scouse Are You Quiz?” and an Alan Partridge themed evening.

David thinks events like this are vital to the city. He said: “For the last four years we’ve been honoured to write this love letter to Liverpool and it was only 20 months ago that we got into events. Since then we’ve pretty much sold out every event we’ve done, whether it be cult cinema nights in unique locations or food and drink festivals in disused warehouses.

“It’s something a bit different to the ordinary and much more than that, there’s a heart and a reason behind them all. Every one of our events is for the good of the city and the independent scene and in the future, we only have more wackier ideas we will try our best to pull off.”

The Office Quiz Night will begin at 7pm at The Merchant on Slater Street on both Tuesday March 21 and Wednesday March 22.
