Birmingham Hippodrome is the UK's most popular single theatre and the busiest visitor attraction in the city centre.
For over 100 years Birmingham Hippodrome has presented the best in arts and entertainment with world class opera and ballet, popular musicals, international dance, comedy and drama together with the best pantomime on the planet.
Even in the midst of the worst recession for decades, total attendances at Hippodrome performances in the last year have been the highest since re-opening in 2001.
As a not-for-profit registered charity and an independent theatre receiving no public subsidy, Birmingham Hippodrome relies on its share of box office receipts; income from hospitality and conferences; as well as generous support from business, individuals and grant-making Trusts. We are a large employer and contribute over £40 million to the local economy each year.
A diverse and exciting programme is the basis of our success. From Calendar Girls to Birmingham Royal Ballet's new Cinderella; sell-outs with Ken Dodd to unique appearances by New York's Mark Morris Dance Group and the Kirov Ballet, Birmingham Hippodrome delivers a programme which is true to both our lyric theatre and music hall roots. Highlights for 2011 include the return of Carlos Acosta and Cirque Eloize in addition to new productions from both BRB and Welsh National Opera.
Success on stage means Birmingham Hippodrome can invest in ambitious plans. Our vision is to be internationally recognised as a ‘Cultural Enterprise'. With our resident partners, we are establishing Birmingham as an International City of Dance and look forward to the third iteration of International Dance Festival Birmingham (IDFB) in spring 2012, co-produced with DanceXchange.
As a key anchor of the city centre's southern expansion in a regenerated Southside, we will attract more visitors more often to an area with an improved environment and identity. We will also grow our physical and creative capacity to produce new performances and new experiences and expand the breadth of our business.
We have grown our role in promoting the city, winning awards and taking leadership roles in business and tourism initiatives as well as campaigning alongside other cultural organisations. In 2010, we were proud to win the Birmingham Post Creative Industry award and the Heart of England Excellence in Tourism Event of the Year for IDFB.
