Preferred bidder named for £45m Snow Hill project

CONSTRUCTION giant Balfour Beatty has been named as preferred contractor for the £45m Two Snow Hill office project in central Birmingham.

The London-based company has beaten off competition from three other industry heavyweights – BAM, Sir Robert McAlpine and John Sisk – to win the lucrative contract.

A spokeswoman for Balfour Beatty confirmed that the company had been named as preferred bidder but declined to make any further comment until the final decision was announced next month.

Construction of the 14-storey scheme is expected to start next year and it will eventually offer 310,867 sq ft of office space. Completion is expected in late 2012.

The Two Snow Hill office project has sat idle for two years after the original backers of the scheme – Anglo Irish Bank – pulled its funding.

Earlier this year developers Ballymore instructed agent Savills to find £110m of funding for the scheme about which the rumour mill has rolled constantly ever since.

The tower is the second stage of the development which saw finance giant KPMG and Barclays Wealth occupy the One Snow Hill.

Law firm Wragge and Co has agreed a pre-let deal on 60% of the second tower for a 20-year lease.

Ballymore has not responded to requests for comment.
