Toy business wins national innovation award

A TOY and gadget manufacturer based in Wolverhampton has won a national award through an initiative to find the UK’s most innovative companies.

Wow! Stuff picked up its prize at an award ceremony in Hong Kong, having been picked from thousands of entries across the UK.

It travelled to the Far East with one other regional winner before being named the overall champion at the ceremony.

As the national winner of HSBC’s Business Thinking initiative, Wow! Stuff will receive up to £100,000 to support the development of their next business idea.

Its managing director Richard North said: “It’s probably the first time I am genuinely speechless.

“Business Thinking will put us on the radar, opening doors because it’s a stamp of approval that says we are going places.”

Head of HSBC CMB UK Noel Quinn added: “We’ve been astounded at the quality and commitment of entrants to the initiative.

“The businesses that have taken part have demonstrated that the UK’s entrepreneurialism and innovative spirit are still thriving, despite challenges presented by the recent economic climate.

“All those that have been involved in the initiative have taken part in a long but rewarding journey.

“In Richard, on one side we clearly saw energy, creativity, enthusiasm. On the other, his execution was exceptional and his ambition was phenomenal.”

The company says it is aiming to take sales from £17m this year to £350m by 2014 and will use the funding to grow its export sales.
