Tenders open for £130m Midland Metro extension

TENDERS are now being invited for the £130m extension of the Midland Metro tram service in central Birmingham.

West Midlands transport authority Centro is seeking contractors for a range of services and projects including depot enhancements, construction of additional stabling sidings, construction of a new testing and commissioning building, a new staff car park and platform modifications on line 1.

In addition, there will be new pipelines, communication and power lines and tramline construction work.

The Wolverhampton service currently terminates at Snow Hill but this will be extended to reach Birmingham New Street.

Midland Metro was one of nine major transport projects which received a boost from central Government last week when transport secretary Philip Hammond pledged to inject £75m into the extension work.

The deadline for tenders is March 11.
