Morgan Sindall secures £12.6m medical centre win

RUGBY-based construction company Morgan Sindall has landed a £12.6m contract to build a new medical centre in the East Midlands.

The University of Leicester’s cardiovascular research centre will be housed at Glenfield Hospital as a four-storey extension to the site’s existing clinical sciences wing.

The 2,200 sq metre facility, designed by the Birmingham office of architects ADP, will double the available research space and boost the university’s laboratories and training facilities.

It will have a biobank capable of storing up to 100,000 samples, a clinical research informatics unit and knowledge unit for capturing and translating anonymous patient data.

The university has committed £8m of its own capital resources to the scheme with a further £4m to be raised for equipment and to complete the build process.

Work is due to start within the coming weeks and be completed in February.

Operations manager Nick Seddon said: “This is the second major project we’ve been awarded from the University of Leicester, following our work on the redevelopment of the Percy Gee Students’ Union building.

“The centre will further advance Leicester’s world-class reputation as a centre of excellence in cardiovascular science and we’re delighted to be involved in the delivery of such a key facility.”
