Sanguine to stop after trio of hotels

THE company behind three major hotel developments in Birmingham city centre has admitted it will not be building any more in the second city.

Debbie Johnson, group operations director at Liverpool-based Sanguine Hospitality, said the firm’s association with Birmingham would cease once its current trio of projects came to an end.

Sanguine is currently developing a budget Hampton by Hilton, in Broad Street, a Holiday Inn Express at Kennedy Tower, in Snow Hill, and a boutique Hotel Indigo, at The Cube.

She said: “The three hotels are our main focus and we’re not looking to invest any further.

“It’s not about building hotels for the sake of it for us and we would not be looking to do any more.”

She was speaking at the latest breakfast seminar event run by commercial property company Bruntwood, owner of Kennedy Tower as well as Mclaren and Cornwall Buildings, also in Birmingham, which focussed on the continuing progress of the hotel development sector.

Sanguine is also building a new restaurant for celebrity chef Marco Pierre White and a gym and spa at The Cube in a project expected to cost around £12m.

Ms Johnson said the hotel and restaurant would open on December 11 and the gym and spa would welcome in new customers from January.

She added that a planned champagne bar was now in negotiations with two potential operators, with a further announcement due soon.

Also speaking at the seminar were Geoff Robotham, property director with new operator Hotel la Tour, which is currently building its first UK hotel next to Moor Street Station.

He said the company was keen to build new sites from scratch and that a “renowned” chef had signed up to operate its restaurant but again was unable to elaborate further on their identity.

They were joined by Marketing Birmingham’s Ian Taylor, who gave an overview of the city’s current hotel and visitor economy.
