Care home plan for former Birmingham pub

The Hare & Hounds in Erdington

A care home business is planning to development a new 82-bed facility of the site of a disused Birmingham pub.

MACC Care, based at the Abbey Rose Nursing Home in Orchard Road, Erdington, is proposing to erect the new home on the site of the former Hare & Hounds, off Marsh Hill, also in Erdington.

The pub ceased trading last year after its owners decided it was no longer viable. It has subsequently been purchased by MACC.

The new facility, designed by A P Architecture, proposes a three/four-storey building complete with secure garden and car parking.

The proposed new home will provide 24-hour care for its residents, and will be registered with the Care Quality Commission (CQC).

The building will feature:

• 82 bedrooms with full wet room en-suite bathrooms
• 24-hour care provision
• Residents coffee shop, chapel, library, gym, and various lounge and dining areas with assisted bathrooms/toilets
• Hairdressing salon and cinema
• Kitchen, laundry, staff facilities
• Secure landscaped garden complete with raised flower beds
• Large reception area, and family meeting room
• A community elderly hub and meeting/activity area

The proposed development is predominantly three storeys in height, with a basement area to the rear, taking advantage of the existing level changes within the site, and additional services would be located within the roof space.

A total of 24 parking spaces including two disabled spaces would be provided for visitors and staff. In addition, there will be a covered cycles store, and a loading bay for service vehicles and an ambulance. The car parking areas are provided at the front of the new care home, allowing the existing established boundary planting from the pub to remain, together with the enhanced landscaping.

A planning statement submitted by A P Architecture, states: “The proposed development of a specialist care facility in this location is ideally suited in many ways, both in terms of the location, and its proposed form. The design, layout and scale compliment and fit well within the surrounding context and is not detrimental to the area within which the development is located.

“There is an identified local need for quality care accommodation in the local area (particularly for people with dementia) and the proposal will provide a valuable community facility as well as extending the employment opportunities for local people.”
