Former international cricketer Gus Mackay is to take over the running of Premiership rugby club Worcester Warriors as part of a management restructure.

Mackay, who represented Zimbabwe during a career that also saw him play for Barnt Green and West Bromwich in the West Midlands, has previously run Sussex and Surrey County Cricket Clubs and rugby league club London Broncos.

He will start as managing director at Sixways Stadium next week, replacing Jim O’Toole, who has been chief executive since February 2015.

Worcester Warriors chairman Bill Bolsover said: “We welcome Gus to his new role at a very exciting time for the commercial side of the business and believe his experience within professional sport will be a key catalyst to drive the club forward off the pitch.”

Mackay will have responsibility for the operations of the club, with responsibility for the rugby department remaining with Director of Rugby Gary Gold, who reports directly to the board of directors.

Worcester has been heavily loss-making in recent years. In the 2015/16 season, its underlying loss was £6.6m, which followed two consecutive years of losses in excess of £5m.

The Warriors finished 11th out of 12 in the Aviva Premiership, winning five of the 22 league matches, having finished 10th in the previous season.
