Clinigen director buys grade II-listed hotel out of administration

Dovecliff Hall Hotel

A director at Burton pharma firm Clinigen has bought a Derbyshire hotel out of administration, saving 18 jobs.

Anton Jenkins has bought the 15-room Dovecliff Hall, part of the Abbot Grange Hotels group, in Stretton after administrator Duff & Phelps turned the hotel around.

The sale was brokered by GVA.

Jenkins said: “As a regular guest of the hotel over a number of years, I was excited by the opportunity to acquire the property and business when I became aware of its availability. We will be honouring all bookings already made and plan to invest in the hotel to sympathetically upgrade this very attractive period property.”

Matt Ingram, managing director in the Birmingham office of Duff & Phelps, said: “We are pleased to announce the swift and smooth disposal of the Dovecliff Hall Hotel. Over the course of the appointment we maintained all bookings and successfully celebrated a number of weddings and other special occasions. The sale of Dovecliff Hall Hotel marks the end of the administration process and secures jobs for all 18 employees.”

James Williamson, director in the Retail, Hotels and Leisure team at GVA, said: “We were pleasantly surprised by the level of interest shown in the hotel by prospective purchasers. The formal marketing commenced at the beginning of March 2017, so to have completed the transaction in such a short time is exceptionally pleasing. This reflects the continued strength in the hotel investment market and we very much look forward to seeing the hotel following the new owner’s investment in the property.”

The Grade II listed former country house was built in 1790 and originally opened as a hotel in 1928, before reverting to a period of private ownership from 1936 to 1987 when it once again traded as a hotel.

The building was extended in 2003, with the addition of a glazed orangery, function room and block of bedrooms at the rear. The hotel also features a library, drawing room, bar and restaurant for use by guests.
