Labour MP Steve McCabe was left with a “very sore and swollen face” after an incident last night when he “was struck with a brick by a motorcycle thug”.

He reported the incident to police and also posted photographs on Twitter of his injuries and of two people on motorbikes. He asked for names to be supplied anonymously so he could pass them onto the police.

The MP for Birmingham Selly Oak was on Greenford Road, Kings Heath, when it happened yesterday.

McCabe has been in the House of Commons for 20 years, which followed eight years as a councillor in Birmingham. He represented Birmingham Hall Green and then Selly Oak since 2010 after constituency boundaries were redrawn.

In the 2017 election, McCabe almost doubled his majority to 15,207.
