Superstar sets titanic sales record at Arena

The Barclaycard Arena has broken its record for the highest-grossing night in its history.

Canadian singer Céline Dion performed two shows in Birmingham – on July 27 and August 3 – with her first night generating revenues of £1.5m.

Her return a week later earned £1.4m, which was the second-highest night the Arena has held in its 26-year history.

Dion’s shows were part of her first European tour in eight years, which took in 25 dates in 15 cities.

Her Birmingham shows were watched by an aggregate of 23,865 fans.

The Barclaycard Arena, which from next month will be called Arena Birmingham, after the naming rights deal ended.

“The first date blew all records out of the water, the second, generated the second highest gross at the venue in our history,” said Ian Congdon, head of NEC Group Arena sales.

“These figures prove why the City of Birmingham continues to be a key destination on the domestic and international touring circuit.

“Céline played one date with us in 2008, so selling for two in 2017, highlights just how strong our current arenas market is in the Midlands, and that we’re located in a city that can sell a high volume of tickets, quickly.”
