A Warwickshire restaurant has been named as the best new entry in the Good Food Guide, in the latest unveiling of the annual restaurant rankings.

Salt, a crowd-funded restaurant in Stratford-upon-Avon which describes itself as “relaxed fine dining”, has been given the accolade just five months after it opened.

The Good Food Guide said: “When we first came across Paul Foster’s cooking, we were so impressed we awarded him our Up-and-Coming Chef award for 2012.

“Now his first solo venture has beaten off some really stiff competition to win Best New Entry. Salt is a real passion project for this young chef. It was made possible by crowdfunding, with contributors paying as little as £20 to help kickstart the business.

“Lucky Stratford to finally have a destination restaurant that stands head and shoulders above the plethora of chains and pubs that form the bulk of the town’s restaurant offering.”

The West Midlands has two restaurants in the top 50 list for the second year running. Simpsons, in Edgbaston, is ranked 40th and Adam’s, in Birmingham, is 43rd. They had been places 35th and 41st in last year’s guide.

There has been a change at the top of the UK’s best restaurants, with Restaurant Nathan Outlaw in Cornwall overtaking L’Enclume in Cumbria, which had been rated as the best for the past four years.

Restaurant Sat Bains in Nottingham is ranked fourth overall, and is the highest-placed Midlands restaurant.

Elizabeth Carter, editor of the Waitrose Good Food Guide, said: “Once again the readers of theguide have pointed our experts towards some brilliant eating in unexpected places.

“Whether it’s fine-dining in a former strip-club, sushi under a railway arch or a fish supper in a shipping container, we find and celebrate culinary flair in all its forms.”
