Traffic Alert: M6 closed in both directions following serious accident

12pm Update

The northbound carriageway is now open but three of the four lanes southbound remain closed. Highways England says traffic is moving southbound but it is very slow and there are long tailbacks on the approaches to Spaghetti Junction.

Latest estimates are that the scene now won’t be cleared until around 4pm.

The M6 in Birmingham is closed in both directions between Junction 6 (A38 Aston Expressway/Birmingham city centre) and Junction 5 (Castle Bromwich) due to a serious collision.

Central Motorway Police Group and the West Midlands Ambulance Service including the Air Ambulance are on scene.

Highways England has warned of long delays both on the motorway and local approach roads. It has said the accident is unlikely to clear until around 1pm.

It has advised motorists to avoid the area if possible and to consider alternative routes, with the M6 Toll being flagged up as one possibility.
