Birmingham law lecturer gets The Italian Job

Ilaria Di Gioia with ex Vice-Consul of Italy, Filippo Libra

A university law lecturer has been appointed Honorary Vice-Consul of Italy in Birmingham.

Ilaria Di Gioia, who lectures at Birmingham City University, will now represent Italy – and Italians – in the Midlands.

The role will see the 31-year-old act assist her countrymen during times of distress or emergencies, as well as reporting births, deaths and marriages to Italian authorities.

“It was a delight to be appointed for the role by the Italian government,” said Ilaria, who hails from Rome.

Before studying for a PhD at BCU’s School of Law in 2013, Ilaria completed a Master’s degree in Public Administration from the Faculty of Political Science at the Sapienza University of Rome.

She began lecturing at BCU in 2016, where she teaches American constitutional law and English legal practices.

She said: “Honorary Vice-Consults don’t make a living as diplomats and I will be continuing my lecturing role at Birmingham City University whilst undertaking my Vice-Consul duties on Saturdays.”
