Housing plan for former Birmingham nursing home

The location of the new housing development

Birmingham developer Seven Capital has secured planning permission to demolish a former nursing home in the city and redevelop the site for housing.

In a reversal of the current trend towards new care facilities, the developer’s scheme for the site of the former Oaklands Nursing Home in Moseley was backed by the city’s planning committee.

The scheme proposes the demolition of the nursing home and its replacement with 11, five-bed terraced and semi-detached three-storey houses, plus associated car parking and landscaping.

The nursing home is a large, three-storey building. The oldest part of the structure dates back to the Victorian period, while extensions to either side were added in the 1980s. The home has been vacant for some time.

It had initially been hoped that some of the original structure could be retained, however, the changes that had been made to the building over the years meant this was impossible. A suggestion the building could be converted into apartments was also dismissed for the same reason.

The surrounding area is a mix of different property types, but predominantly residential and of the Victorian villa variety so characteristic of this part of Moseley.

Planning officers acknowledged the concerns of some residents, who claimed that the development would increase traffic in the area and put a further squeeze on parking provision.

However, they said that overall, the design was acceptable.
